Initiated by Hanka van der Voet and Femke de Vries, A Magazine Reader is a workshop in which one specific fashion magazine (mainstream, high-end) is collectively read, dissected, and critically analyzed from various perspectives and put together again in an alternative form: a new zine that gives insight into the cultural power and forms of value production that are at the core of fashion media. The aim is to attentively and criti-cally read, instead of browse through a fashion magazine in order to understand and show its cultural, political, social and economic power.
This article revolves around the idea of the ‘culture of emotions’, self-help, therapy and self-transformation within the construct of fashion.
Digging out the emotions and muddling them with misleading and antithetical information, I wonder: women’s magazine, magazine for women; why are you sabotaging our own kind?
